How Zara Tisch Built Terez On Joy And A Family-First Ethos
The founder of Terez shares how she turned a personal low into a brand that celebrates life’s bright moments.
When Zara Tisch founded Terez 17 years ago from her parents’ basement, she wasn’t chasing a trend. Before activewear was a thing, Zara Tisch was already making it fun. What started as colorful handbag linings turned into leggings—and then into a movement. What began as a personal outlet during a difficult time turned into a vibrant activewear brand rooted in positivity, bold expression, and deep values. In this candid interview, Zara shares how she built Terez from the ground up, her unique take on fashion, how color informs her perspective, and the real advice she has for aspiring entrepreneurs.
OCUC: What inspired you to start Terez? Was there a specific moment that sparked the idea?
Zara Tisch: I founded Terez 17 years ago from my parent's basement. I was in a dark place in my life and wanted to create something that made me happy, and in turn I thought would make other people happy as well. I didn't understand the journey that was going to become MY LIFE, but what started with making leather handbags became a brand that represents celebration of life's GOOD moments.
OCUC: What gap did you see in the activewear or fashion market that you wanted to fill?
Zara Tisch: I never saw a void or "gap" in the market, as the activewear market simply didn't exist. We made pieces we thought were cool and wanted to wear. We were fun and bold. We took the vibrant, colorful linings out of our handbags and made leggings out of them. That's what we wanted to wear! That's how it started.
OCUC: How has your Jewish identity shaped your approach to business, leadership, or branding?
Zara Tisch: I believe the core of Judaism teaches you to be a good person in this world. To be someone with good values and respect for others. I try to live my life by this and therefore lead my business and brand with the same ethos.
OCUC: Are there any Jewish values or traditions that guide how you run your company?
Zara Tisch: My Terez team is my family and I do my best to lead with a family first mentality.
OCUC: What advice do you have for students who are looking to become entrepreneurs?
Zara Tisch: It's hard. You need to have passion and be mentally tough. Make sure you are ready to put everything and more into your business. And remember, its team first.
